1st Drafts

Saturday Poll

Now that SUN is wrapped up, I’ve been considering the future of “YA on Saturday.” I have some ideas, but I’d love to hear feedback from you, my Saturday readers. After all, I don’t want to waste your time with useless posts. With a new school year bearing down on you, your schedule will change. Perhaps your free time will be drastically reduced. We have to make the most of what little time we have.

I thought about starting a second draft project, but it’s too soon for that. You need time away from your first draft! Maybe we could tackle the second draft during a school break. However, I could post information to get you thinking about the second draft, so that you’re prepared for it when it comes around—posts about revising and editing.

General posts are okay, but I would love to give specific examples of common problems. I could make up examples … or you could send me one or two paragraphs of your story for me to critique and share online. That way, everyone benefits. I know the thought of turning over your work for dissection is scary, but you could choose to remain anonymous. You could email me the paragraphs, and I wouldn’t include your name in the post. Totally confidential.

Another option is Q & A—I could try to answer any writing-related questions you may have. But again, this depends on you. I won’t make up questions and pretend someone asked me, so I’d need real questions from real people. This, too, could be confidential.

So tell me: what appeals to you? What would be most helpful? Are you willing to send story excerpts for me to work with?

I’m also open to any other suggestions you may have! Here’s a poll to start the brainstorming …

Please take the time to complete this poll; I’d greatly appreciate your thoughts! And if you want to talk to me privately, use the “Contact Me” tab at the top of this website.

Thanks so much, and have a great weekend!

  1. Hello Erin: All of the suggestions in your ‘Saturday’ poll are of equal importance, I think. Is there any way you could devote ‘X’ number of Saturdays to each subject?
Speaking for myself, I’ve found your ‘Notes’ extremely motivating and helpful thus far…..not that I’ve made that much progress, although I am steadily moving forward.

However, I can’t comment on ‘second drafts’ yet, since I’ve not finished my first draft!

Hope this little note serves to let you know I’m still out here soaking up your ‘words of wisdom’….keep up the good work!

I shall endeavour to email you next week…..a somewhat tardy response to your so welcome email to me….

    All the best,

    • Hey Ann! You make a very good point! Each Saturday I could do something different to mix it up. Write a post one week, critique the next, showcase mistakes after that, answer a question if I get one, etc etc. A little bit of everything! Thanks for the idea!!

You know, you’re not the only writer on a first draft! And I certainly don’t want to neglect any stage of writing. So if you think of any questions about the first draft (or anything) that others might be interested in hearing about, please let me know!!

Look forward to your email, but no rush if you’re busy on your novel! 🙂 And thank you for the encouragement!!

  2. Hi Syd…..Hi Erin…..

Make that two guinea pigs, if need be…..(I don’t seem to be able to find a ‘smiley face’, othewise there would be one!) Am somewhat computer challenged…..Sigh! lol…

    • Another guinea pig!! FABULOUS!! I’m so excited about my guinea pigs!! Thanks, Ann!!

OH, and WordPress will create the smiley face for you. Just type a colon and a parenthesis together, no space between. After you submit the comment, it will show up as a smiley! 🙂 Or you can make a grin with a colon plus capital D. 😀 Try it and see if it works!
