Week 3 of Teen Yoga!
Theme of the Week: Even the broken can heal. We are all broken in some way, whether it’s physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually. We have broken bones or broken hearts or broken lives. The good news is—you’re not alone. And it’s always possible to heal. Yoga takes you through the healing process one step at a time. It helps your body first, then calms you, then changes how you view the world (including yourself).
Pose of the Week: Corpse pose. This is the final relaxation at the end of class. You lie flat on your back, motionless, feet flopped open and palms facing up. Take a few deep breaths, then let the breath fade until you don’t notice it anymore. Release all the tension in your body, relaxing every muscle. Close your eyes and unclench your teeth and jaw. Still your mind and let thoughts drift away. In class, corpse pose is about ten minutes long, but at home you can make it as long as you want. This pose develops creativity, focus, and determination. It’s essential for renewing and rejuvenating the body, for reaping all the benefits of your yoga practice. Don’t make the mistake of skipping this pose. Everyone needs time to relax and let go.
Quotes of the Week:
“You will lose someone you can’t live without, and your heart will be badly broken, and the bad news is that you never completely get over the loss of your beloved. But this is also the good news. They live forever in your broken heart that doesn’t seal back up. And you come through. It’s like having a broken leg that never heals perfectly—that still hurts when the weather gets cold, but you learn to dance with the limp.” ~Anne Lamott
“It is only with true love and compassion that we can begin to mend what is broken in the world. It is these two blessed things that can begin to heal all broken hearts.” ~Steve Maraboli
Playlist of the Week: Click here for the songs I play during class.
Journal Questions of the Week: Have I ever felt broken? If so, how did I heal? Do I feel broken now? If so, what can I do about it?
Goal of the Week: Everyone is too busy, too stressed. Make time for stillness and peace, at least five minutes in Corpse Pose every day. Your body and mind will thank you with renewed health and energy.
Good luck, and have fun!
