Teen Yoga 5: Believing in Dreams

For more details about yoga, class guidelines, or permission slips for teens, click on the “Yoga” tab at the top of this page.

Theme of the Week: Believing in hopes, wishes, and dreams. Yoga improves your self-awareness and your self-esteem, which helps you believe you can do anything. You can find the power to make your dreams come true!

Pose of the Week: Downward Dog, one of my favorite poses! Begin on your hands and knees, looking down at the mat. Tuck your head under as you straighten your legs, so your body forms an inverted “V.” Hands are shoulder-width apart, feet are hip-width apart. Arms are fully extended, but legs can be slightly bent if you have tight hamstrings. Heels can be pressed to the mat, or as close to the mat as they want to go. Let your head and neck relax down between your elbows. Push your hips toward the back wall. Back is straight and strong, shoulder bones sliding down the back. Take slow, deep breaths. This pose may be difficult to hold at first, but with time you’ll become more comfortable with it. This is a super pose: it strengthens, stretches, and energizes the body all at the same time! It also calms the mind and relieves headaches, backaches, and menstrual pain.

Quotes of the Week:

“I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge. That myth is more potent than history. That dreams are more powerful than facts. That hope always triumphs over experience. That laughter is the only cure for grief. And I believe that love is stronger than death.” —Robert Fulghum

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” —Eleanor Roosevelt

“Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead.” —Louisa May Alcott

“It’s difficult in times like these: ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality. It’s a wonder I haven’t abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.” —Anne Frank

Journal Questions of the Week: What dreams do I have? How can I make them come true?

Goal of the Week: Do a downward dog at least once a day. Soon you will feel powerful, calm, and ready to believe in dreams!

Good luck, and have fun!
